CLASS SYLLABUS YEARS 1-7 & OWLs Why is astronomy studied by young witches and wizards in training at Hogwarts? In part, the study of the planets' motions must provide a theoretical base for learning astrological divination. Perhaps an answer lies in the original meaning of the word “wizard” – wise one. It seems to me that in order to be a wizard, one is expected to have mastered more than just the magical arts; one must also have knowledge of the natural world, through the study of such subjects as botany (Herbology), zoology (Care of Magical Creatures), and chemistry (Potions). Studying the cosmos in Astronomy is another example of this. credit: HPL.
